Happy Labor Day from TimeClock Plus

According to the United States Department of Labor, Labor Day was a created as way to celebrate the social and economic achievements of the American worker. Some documentation points to Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor as the founder of Labor Day. However, Matthew Maguire, a member of the International Association of Machinists, has been credited by some as the first to recommend the holiday in 1882. Local Unions organized picnics and demonstrations to bring more attention to the importance of our American laborers.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the official day and by 1886 municipal governments began to recognize the holiday. Congress passed an act in 1894 establishing the day as a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and surrounding territories.

“For many decades, Labor Day was viewed by workers not only as a means to celebrate their accomplishments, but also as a day to air their grievances and discuss strategies for securing better working conditions and salaries. Nowadays, Labor Day is associated less with union activities and protest marches and more with leisure. For many, the holiday is a time for family picnics, sporting events, and summer’s last hurrah.” (The Library of Congress, 2011).

The Team at TimeClock Plus wishes everyone a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend. Enjoy those hotdogs on the grill!
